Miley Ray Cyrus is a multi-talented American artist who came into this world as Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992. Cyrus, widely regarded as a pop star, has garnered praise for her ever-changing artistic style and image makeovers. She is one of the few instances of a child star who went on to have a successful adult music career; she is Billy Ray Cyrus's daughter. The role of Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana, the protagonist of the hit Disney Channel series that aired from 2006 to 2011, propelled Cyrus to stardom and financial success. She had two number-one soundtracks as Hannah Montana, which helped her attain popularity on the Billboard charts.
Cyrus kicked out her solo career with the 2007 and 2008 pop rock albums Meet Miley Cyrus, which both reached number one in the US. The Time of Our Lives(2009), the EP that followed, peaked at #2 on the US charts. "Party in the U.S.A.", the album's debut track, went on to become a 14-time platinum seller and one of the best-selling singles of all time in the nation. With the critically acclaimed but critically panned Can't Be Tamed (2010), she attempted to project an image of maturity by delving into dance-pop. Bangerz (2013), Cyrus's subsequent album for RCA Records, showcased a stylistic shift as she drew inspiration from hip hop and R&B. With the singles "We Can't Stop" and "Wrecking Ball," her first to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, this album became her sixth consecutive chart-topper. Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015) was her foray into experimental music, Younger Now (2017) her foray into country pop, and Plastic Hearts (2020), her critically acclaimed foray into rock, were her subsequent albums. Cyrus moved to Columbia Records in 2020 and dropped Endless Summer Vacation, her eighth studio album, the following year (2023). Her second US number one hit, "Flowers" graced the charts worldwide and went on to win two Grammys, including Record of the Year.
The Last Song(2010), Bolt(2008), LOL(2012), So Undercover(2013), and Hannah Montana: The Movie(2009) are among Cyrus's acting credits. Notable television appearances include Miley: The Movement (2013), Crisis in Six Scenes (2017), The Voice (2016) and "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" (2019) as coaches, and Miley herself as a topic in the documentary. Endless Summer Vacation (Backyard Sessions) (2023) was a documentary concert program featuring Miley Cyrus, and she also presented Miley Cyrus's New Year's Eve Party (2021–2022).
Five Billboard Music Awards, two Brit Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, two Grammys, and eight Guinness World Records are among Cyrus's many honors. The Walt Disney Company honored her for her many years of service by naming her a Disney Legend. According to Billboard, Cyrus is one of the best female musicians of all time, the ninth-greatest female artist overall, and one of the top pop singers of the 2000s. Notable listicles that have included her include the Time 100 (in 2008 and 2014), the Forbes Celebrity 100 (in 2010 and 2015), and 30 Under 30 (in 2014 and 2021). She is among Billboard's most successful musicians of the 21st century and holds the ninth spot among female digital singles artists certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Cyrus is involved in more than just music and acting. In 2014, she established the non-profit Happy Hippie Foundation to aid LGBTQ youngsters and end teenage homelessness. The foundation received funding from the online video series Backyard Sessions (2012–2023).

Billy Ray Cyrus, a country music artist, and Leticia "Tish" Jean Cyrus, a former Finley, had a daughter named Destiny Hope on November 23, 1992, in Franklin, Tennessee. Her irregular resting heart rate is a result of her congenital disorder, supraventricular tachycardia. The fact that her parents gave her the name Destiny Hope showed how confident they were in her abilities. She was known as "Smiley" by her parents before they abbreviated it to "Miley" due to her habit of smiling frequently while she was a baby. Miley Ray Cyrus became her official name in 2008; her second name pays tribute to her Kentucky-born grandpa, the Democratic politician Ronald Ray Cyrus. Cyrus has the legendary Dolly Parton as his godmother.
A year after Cyrus was born, on December 28, 1993, her parents secretly wed, despite the advise of her father's record business. Braison and Noah were their two other children. Her mom also has two additional kids, Brandi and Trace, from a prior relationship. Christopher Cody, who was born to her father in April 1992, spent his childhood in South Carolina apart from his mother, Kristin Luckey, who worked as a waitress.
Every one of Cyrus's siblings on his mother's side is a famous performer. Metro Station is an electronic pop band that features Trace on vocals and guitar. In addition to acting, Braison, Noah, and Braison both model, sing, and compose music. Brandi is a professional DJ and a former member of the indie rock duo Frank + Derol. Just outside of Nashville, on 500 acres of property, is the Cyrus farmhouse.
While residing in Thompson's Station, Tennessee, Cyrus and her family attended Heritage Elementary School in Williamson County. The family relocated to Los Angeles so she could attend Options for Youth Charter Schools, where she studied with a private instructor while filming Hannah Montana. From her Christian upbringing and baptism in a Southern Baptist church, she relocated to Hollywood in 2005. She was a devout Christian who wore a purity ring and went to church frequently as a child. While her father was filming the TV series Doc in Toronto, Canada, Cyrus and her family relocated there in 2001, when Cyrus was eight years old. Following her 2001 Mirvish Theatre outing with Billy Ray Cyrus in Mamma Mia! Miley Cyrus reached out and seized his elbow at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, declaring, "This is what I want to do, daddy. I want to be an actress." She then started taking acting and singing classes at Toronto's Armstrong Acting Studio.
The character of Kylie in her father's TV series Doc was Cyrus's acting debut. Role as "Young Ruthie" in Tim Burton's Big Fish (2003) brought her birth name to the limelight. At the same time, she and Taylor Lautner were trying out for the part of Lavagirl and Sharkboy in the upcoming 3-D feature picture. She turned down the part, despite being one of two finalists, in favor of appearing in Hannah Montana. She became her daughter's manager and did everything she could to get her a team so that Miley could advance in her profession. Mitchell Gossett, who oversees the young division at Cunningham Escott Slevin Doherty, was Cyrus's signatory. Many people believe that Gossett was instrumental in Cyrus's audition for Hannah Montana and in "discovering" her. Jason Morey of Morey Management Group handled her music career once she signed with him; Dolly Parton had recommended him. She brought on board the family financial manager, who was her father's employee.
Work History
From 2006 to 2009, there was Hannah Montana and the early stages of song release.
At thirteen years old, Cyrus tried out for the role of Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel show. Her comedic performance got her cast as the lead after she tried out for the part of the protagonist's closest friend. Despite initial rejection due to being "too small and too young" for the position, her singing and silly acting skills ultimately landed her the lead role. Soon after its March 2006 launch, the show became one of basic cable's most popular shows, drawing in more viewers than any other Disney Channel program. In September 2006, Cyrus went on tour with the Cheetah Girls as Hannah Montana, performing songs from the first season of the program. Her popularity with the show earned her the title of "teen idol." October of that year saw the release of a soundtrack by Walt Disney Records featuring Cyrus. The album topped the US Billboard 200 and sold over three million copies globally; it was well-received by critics as well. Once the soundtrack was out, Cyrus became the first Walt Disney Company performer to have deals in music, film, television, and consumer goods.
In order to market her music that is not from the Hannah Montana soundtrack, Cyrus inked a four-album agreement with Hollywood Records. June 2007 saw the release of Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, her second studio album. The first CD was listed as "Hannah Montana"'s second soundtrack, and the second as Miley Cyrus's first official studio album. The album has sold over three million copies and became her second to top the Billboard 200. The album's lead song, "See You Again"(2007), came out months after the project itself. After its debut, the song went on to sell over two million copies in the US, proving its commercial success. The 2007 song "Ready, Set, Don't Go" included her father and her daughter. In order to promote the release of Best of Both Worlds, Cyrus went on her wildly successful tour in 2007 and 2008. Officials at Ticketmaster made the comment that "there [hadn't] been a demand of this level or intensity since The Beatles or Elvis." The smash hit tour gave rise to the 2008 3D concert film Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, which became a theatrical release. The picture had a longer run than planned due to its success, which was unexpected.
In February 2008, Cyrus and her friend Mandy Jiroux started uploading videos to YouTube under the name "The Miley and Mandy Show." The films quickly gained a significant amount of internet admiration. A teenage hacker with access to Cyrus's Gmail account published many photos of the singer in her underwear and swimsuit online in April 2008. Reports surfaced that Cyrus, who was fifteen years old at the time, had posed topless for Vanity Fair photographer Annie Leibovitz, further fueling the scandal. Despite the photo giving the idea that Cyrus was shirtless, the New York Times later explained that she was really covered in a bed sheet.
In June of that year, Cyrus released Breakout, her second studio album. This was her third album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, and its first-week sales were the highest of her career. Cyrus made her acting debut in the 2008 animated picture Bolt, which co-starred John Travolta. She also contributed to the film's score by co-writing the song "I Thought I Lost You" (2008), which Travolta and Cyrus sang in a duet. She received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song for the critically and commercially successful film.
As a single from the Hannah Montana soundtrack, Cyrus released "The Climb" (2009) in March 2009. It became a crossover smash in the country and pop music genres and was well-received by critics and consumers alike. Cyrus became the youngest artist in history to have four number-one albums on the chart when, at the age of 16, the soundtrack—which contains the single—became her fourth entry to top the Billboard 200. In July 2009, she dropped her fourth Hannah Montana soundtrack, which peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 in its first week. Afterwards, Cyrus debuted her Miley Cyrus and Max Azria clothing brand at Walmart. Its single "Party in the U.S.A." and extended play (EP) The Time of Our Lives(2009) served as promotional tools. As Cyrus put it, the album was "a transitioning album [...] really to introduce people to what I want my next record to sound like and with time I will be able to do that a little more." The single "Party in the U.S.A." went on to become one of Cyrus's most popular songs and a signature sound. Her debut world tour, 2009's Wonder World Tour, was well-received by critics and audiences alike. Cyrus gave a performance at the Royal Variety Performance in Blackpool, Lancashire, on December 7, 2009, for members of the British royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II.
Among female musicians, she was 2009's #4 best-selling artist, according to Billboard.
Taking a page out of Nicholas Sparks's book, Cyrus featured in the 2010 film The Last Song in an effort to project an image of maturity. It bombed at the box office while receiving mostly unfavorable reviews. Cannonball (2010), Cyrus's third studio album, was a further effort to change her public perception. Much debate erupted over the album's lyrics and Cyrus's live performances, which reflected a more dance-oriented sound compared to her earlier works. In its first week of availability, it sold 106,000 copies and became her first studio album to fail to reach the top spot on the Billboard 200 list in the US. October saw Cyrus's final soundtrack release as Hannah Montana, although its poor chart position compared to her prior albums made it a commercial flop.
A video showing Cyrus, who was eighteen years old at the time, using salvia with a bong went viral in December of 2010 and added fuel to the fire of controversy surrounding her. She peaked at number thirteen on Forbes' Celebrity 100 list at the end of 2010. She said that she only wanted to perform in places where she felt "the most love" throughout her many problematic times, which she outlined as the reason her 2011 global Gypsy Heart Tour did not include any North American dates. After "Can't Be Tamed" came out, Cyrus formally left Hollywood Records. After finishing her run with Hannah Montana, Cyrus claimed she was going on a musical break to concentrate on her acting career. College was definitely out of the question, she said.
Cyrus headlined Saturday Night Live on March 5, 2011, and she made light of her previous scandals throughout the show. Originally set to voice Mavis in the animated feature Hotel Transylvania that November, Cyrus was replaced by Selena Gomez in February 2012 after being pulled from the production. The true reason Cyrus left the movie was because she purchased her ex-boyfriend Liam Hemsworth a penis-shaped birthday cake and tasted it. She initially said she wanted to focus on her music. Along with Kelly Osbourne and Khloé Kardashian, she appeared in the MTV show Punk'd. In the 2012 indie film LOL, Cyrus co-starred with Demi Moore. The picture bombed at the box office and received mostly negative reviews, thus it had a limited run. She played the part of a college sorority member who is an undercover FBI agent in the comedic film So Undercover.
In the spring and summer of 2012, Cyrus uploaded a series of live performances on YouTube under the name Backyard Sessions. The performances were of timeless music that Cyrus enjoyed. After starting work on a fourth album that never materialized, Cyrus picked up where he left off in late 2012 with a new musical endeavor. The 2012 single "Morning Sun," which she co-wrote with Rock Mafia, was a free download on the internet. Their first song, "The Big Bang" (2010), featured her in its music video. Future work by Borgore includes Cyrus's guest vocals on the song "Decisions" (2012). Cyrus and Hemsworth were both included in the music video for the song. Two episodes of the CBS comedy Two and a Half Men featured her as the guest star Missi. After getting a blonde pixie cut instead of her usual long brown hair, Cyrus became a media darling. She said she had "never felt more [herself] in [her] whole life" and that the change had "really changed [her] life."
: Bangerz and Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz (2013)–2015 (2015)
Larry Rudolph, who is most renowned for managing Britney Spears, was Cyrus's manager in 2013, while Adam Leber of Maverick manages her at the moment. The news broke that Cyrus had officially signed with RCA Records. The collaboration with Pharrell Williams and Mike Will Made-It, among others, gave her fourth studio album a hip-hop flavor. Her work with other hip-hop artists is extensive, and she had an appearance on "Ashtrays and Heartbreaks" (2013), the lead single from Snoop Lion's twelfth studio album, Reincarnated. She worked with will.i.am on the promotional single "Fall Down" (2013), which came out the same month. Not since "Can't Be Tamed" (2010) did she make an appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 list, with this song debuting at number fifty-eight. "Twerk" by Lil Twist included her guest vocals in addition to Justin Bieber's. Unknown factors led to the song's unrelease, but it made it online anyhow. Mike Will Made It's 2013 single "23"—which featured Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, and Juicy J—debuted at #11 on the Hot 100 and sold over a million copies globally as of 2013. The announcement of Cyrus's inclusion took place on May 23, 2013.
"We Can't Stop" is Cyrus's latest single, which she dropped on June 3. It was widely considered her comeback hit, and it went on to become a commercial smash, reaching the top of charts in countries like the UK. Within twenty-four hours after its release, the music video for the song had more views than any other Vevo video ever before, and it was the first to exceed 100 million views. Cyrus and Robin Thicke's 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance was a hot topic due to the extensive media coverage and public criticism it garnered. The audience found her "cringe-worthy" and her "disturbing" foam finger mimicked sex activities to be the most disturbing parts of her presentation. It was on the same day as the VMAs that Cyrus released "Wrecking Ball" (2013), the second single from Bangerz. According to Sinéad O'Connor, "you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether it's the music business or yourself doing the pimping." The music video, which featured Cyrus swinging nude on a wrecking ball, went viral with over 19 million views in the first 24 hours after its release. Critics accused Cyrus of objectifying herself. But this didn't stop the song from becoming Cyrus's first US Hot 100 hit, which she held for three weeks. Its sales surpassed two million units.
Miley: The Movement, a documentary that debuted on MTV on October 2, 2013, followed the making of Bangerz, Miley's fourth studio album, which came out on October 4, 2013. With 270,000 copies sold in its first week, the album was an immediate commercial hit, topping the Billboard 200. Cyrus returned to the helm of Saturday Night Live on October 5. Rapper Future included Cyrus and Mr. Hudson on his November 5th single, "Real and True," and the music video for the song dropped on November 10th, 2013. She was named MTV Artist of the Year at the end of 2013.
She performed Bangerz songs in an acoustic concert performance airing on MTV Unplugged on January 29, 2014, with Madonna making an appearance. Thanks to its record-breaking 1.7 million streaming, it surpassed all previous MTV Unplugged programs in the previous decade. Cyrus, Natalie Westling, and Esmerelda Seay Reynolds were all part of Marc Jacobs's Spring 2014 ad campaign. In 2014, she debuted her controversial Bangerz Tour, which reviewers praised. Tragically, Cyrus's Alaskan Klee Kai was discovered at her house, mauled to death, following a confrontation with a coyote, just two months into her tour. After two weeks of using cephalexin for her sinus infection, Cyrus had an adverse response that sent her to the Kansas City hospital. Two weeks after she delayed a few dates on her US tour, she continued the trip, starting with the European leg.
During her time working with the Flaming Lips on their cover of "With a Little Help from My Fwends" (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) by the Beatles, Cyrus started collaborating with Wayne Coyne on her fifth studio album. She stated that she was releasing the album at her own pace, taking her time to concentrate on the songs. Working together, Cyrus and Coyne created "a slightly wiser, sadder, more true version" of Cyrus's pop music, which Coyne likened to Pink Floyd and Portishead's discographies. At the same time, Cyrus was busy filming appearances in 2015's The Night Before and 2015's A Very Murray Christmas.
In 2015, rumors started circulating that Cyrus was really working on two albums at once, with the intention of releasing one of them for free. Her manager verified this by saying that her client was prepared to terminate her contract with RCA Records in the event that the label refused to allow her to release a free album. Cyrus made history as the first openly pansexual presenter of the MTV Video Music Awards in 2015, and she surprised viewers with a performance of her new single "Dooo It!" (2015) at the end of the event. Following her performance, Cyrus took to SoundCloud to announce the release of her fifth studio album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015), which was accessible for free streaming. Cyrus did much of the writing and producing for this experimental and trippy album that features psychedelic rock, alternative pop, and psychedelic pop.
2016–2017: Younger Now and The Voice
Cyrus started working on her sixth studio album in 2016, after releasing her fifth album the year before. Throughout season ten of the American singing competition The Voice, she played a pivotal role as a counselor. When Cyrus replaced Gwen Stefani as a coach for Season 11 of The Voice in March, she became the show's youngest coach in the show's history. Cyrus was a co-star in Amazon Studios' Crisis in Six Scenes, a Woody Allen TV series, which premiered in September 2016. Her character, a radical activist on the run from the law in the 1960s, wreaks havoc on a traditional family's home. While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on September 17, 2016, she sang a version of "Baby, I'm In the Mood for You" by Bob Dylan. The superhero picture Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. also featured Cyrus's uncredited voice appearance as Mainframe. #2, which came out in May of 2017.
As the lead song off her sixth studio album, Cyrus dropped "Malibu" on May 11, 2017. The song peaked at number ten in its second week of release after debuting at number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100. After playing "Inspired" at the One Love Manchester benefit event on June 8, Cyrus released the song on June 9. The album's promotional single was it. Announcing the title and release date of her sixth studio album, Younger Now, on August 8, Cyrus finally dropped the bomb on September 29, 2017. Released as the album's second single on August 18, the title tune reached No. 79 on the Billboard Hot 100 upon premiere. Cyrus gave a performance of the song during the 2017 MTV VMAs on August 27. She took the stage at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge on September 15th to play a set that included "Malibu," "Younger Now," "See You Again," "Party in the U.S.A.", and a rendition of Roberta Flack's song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (music by Ewan McColl). On October 2, Cyrus paid tribute to the victims of the Las Vegas tragedy by performing her 2009 hit single "The Climb" for the first time since 2011, along with a cover of Dido's "No Freedom" as part of her one-week regular musical performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Several protests, rallies, and charity events have subsequently featured performances of the old song, including the March For Our Lives in Washington, D.C. In the same year, Cyrus made a triumphant return to The Voice as a coach for the thirteenth season after a one-season absence. Cyrus announced her departure from The Voice for season fourteen on October 5, 2017. Cyrus said on October 30, 2017, that she will not be touring in support of Younger Now or releasing any further singles from the album.
**2018–2019**: Black Mirror and She Is Coming**
While promoting her September 2017 single "Younger Now," Cyrus said she was "already two songs deep on the next [album]." Her seventh studio album will have contributions from her longtime collaborator Mike Will Made It as well as newcomers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. After its November 29, 2018 release, her debut single with Mark Ronson, "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart" from his 2019 album Late Night Feelings, was well-received commercially, particularly in Europe. The single reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, number one in Ireland, and number one in a number of Eastern European countries like Croatia and Hungary.
In the first three months of this year, Cyrus rose to prominence thanks to her cover songs. This year, she paid tribute to her godmother Dolly Parton by performing "Islands in the Stream" with Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes. They had previously performed "In My Blood" at the 61st Grammy Awards a few days earlier. In 2018, she had participated in MusiCares Person of the Year, which celebrated Fleetwood Mac. Other covers that Cyrus has done include Ariana Grande's "No Tears Left to Cry" for BBC Radio's Live Lounge, "As Hope & Promise Fade" for the Chris Cornell tribute concert I Am The Highway, and "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" by Elton John, which she covered for the tribute album Revamp: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin. Cyrus has also performed at Chris Cornell's tribute concert I Am The Highway. By covering "The Bitch Is Back" at 2018's I'm Still Standing: A Grammy Salute to Elton John tribute show, Cyrus paid respect to John as well.
Cyrus announced on Twitter on May 31, 2019, that her seventh studio album, She Is Miley Cyrus, would be released in the autumn. Three six-song EPs, She Is Coming on May 31, She Is Here in the summer, and She Is Everything in the fall, will precede the full-length album. The album She Is Coming debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 with 36,000 album-equivalent units. The first song "Mother's Daughter" entered at number 54 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The album featured vocal duets with RuPaul, Swae Lee, Mike Will Made It, and Ghostface Killah. There were two MTV Video Music Awards for the original music video and a Best Remixed Recording nomination for Wuki's version of "Mother's Daughter" at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. Cyrus went on a summer European tour to promote the EP, stopping at prestigious music festivals such as Primavera Sound and Glastonbury.
Cast members of Cyrus's "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" episode of the 2018–19 Netflix science fiction series Black Mirror shot in South Africa. The streaming service Netflix debuted it on June 5, 2019. The episode featured her voice acting the role of Ashley Too, an artificial intelligence doll extension of the fictitious pop sensation Ashley O. Many drew parallels between Cyrus's advocacy for Britney Spears's freedom and the narrative surrounding her conservatorship. The episode's theme song "On a Roll" and its music video debuted on June 13, with the single and its B-side "Right Where I Belong" hitting digital stores the following day.
According to a report that surfaced on June 27, Cyrus has worked alongside Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey on the lead single "Don't Call Me Angel" from the soundtrack of the 2019 film Charlie's Angels. September 13, 2019 was the date of its release. "Slide Away" was Cyrus's first single following the announcement of her divorce from Hemsworth in August 2019. Lyrics like "Move on, we're not 17, I'm not who I used to be" in the song referred to their split. She ended her ten-year romance with Hemsworth in September 2019 with the release of a music video that had other allusions, such as a ten of hearts playing card at the bottom of a pool.
Plastic Hearts and TV projects in 2020 and 2022
Cyrus issued the lead single "Midnight Sky" from her seventh studio album on August 14, 2020. She also announced that the EPs She Is Here and She Is Everything would not be released. This was because Cyrus had experienced some significant life changes, such as her divorce from Hemsworth and the destruction of their California house in the Woolsey Fire, which did not align with the project's intended theme. In 2017, her solo single "Malibu" peaked at number fourteen on the US Billboard Hot 100, but "Midnight Sky" became her highest-charting single to date! From a global perspective, the song has reached a peak of number five on the UK Singles Chart in the UK. Blended with Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen" later on, the song became widespread.
In addition to her third Backyard Session on MTV in October, Cyrus used Instagram to announce the November 27, 2020, release of her seventh studio album, Plastic Hearts. Once finished, it was going to be the last EP under the title She Is Miley Cyrus. Her thirteenth top 10 album, it debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 60,000 sales and was well-received by reviewers upon its release. Cyrus shattered the record for most top-five albums by a female music artist in the 21st century with that entry. Singles "Prisoner" (with English singer Dua Lipa) and "Angels like You" (which reached at #8 and #66 in the UK, respectively) were born out of Cyrus's foray into rock and glam rock with Plastic Hearts. Billy Idol and Joan Jett were among the vocalists that collaborated on the record. Cyrus decided to include the live renditions of "Heart of Glass" by Blondie and "Zombie" by The Cranberries in response to overwhelming public demand and online buzz.
The Webby Special Achievement Award for 2020 went to Cyrus. Cyrus played at the inaugural TikTok Tailgate event in Tampa in February 2021 in front of 7,500 immunized healthcare professionals. Airing on CBS and TikTok, it was the pre-show for Super Bowl LV. A music video for the song "Angels like You" included the performance. Cyrus left RCA in March 2021 to join Sony Music's Columbia Records, which is a sibling label of RCA. Despite claims that her time as Hannah Montana caused Cyrus an identity issue, Cyrus celebrated the show's 15th anniversary that same month by posting an open letter to the character on social media. Since then, speculation has persisted over a potential return of the show. This was Cyrus's debut single under Columbia Records; it was a remix of "Without You" by The Kid Laroi, released on April 23, 2021. In Indianapolis, at the NCAA March Madness Final Four on April 3, 2021, Cyrus played for the crowd of frontline healthcare professionals.
A first-look deal with Cyrus's studio Hopetown Entertainment was part of an overall deal she inked with NBCUniversal in May 2021. Under the terms of the deal, Cyrus will star in three specials and develop projects for the company's outlets; the first of these, a Pride concert special called Stand By You, premiered the following month on Peacock. June saw Cyrus's studio cover of "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica make its way onto The Metallica Blacklist, a tribute album honoring the band's self-titled album that featured covers recorded by a variety of artists and published to celebrate the original album's 30th anniversary. Yo-Yo Ma, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and pianist Elton John are among the other guests on the tune. In October of 2020, the artist hinted of a Metallica cover album and had previously performed the song live at Glastonbury.
Cyrus hinted to a concert tour in the lead-up to the release of Plastic Hearts. Cyrus headlined other summer 2021 music festivals around the US, including as Music Midtown, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits, despite the epidemic delaying the tour. She then announced in the fall of that year that she will be returning to South America in early 2022 for her first tour in seven years. Featuring performances by Cyrus, 24kGoldn, Anitta, Billie Joe Armstrong, Brandi Carlile, Jack Harlow, Kitty Cash, and Saweetie, Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party was the second special off her deal with NBCUniversal. Cyrus co-hosted the show from Miami with Pete Davidson, a cast member of Saturday Night Live, and also served as co-executive producer under her production company Hopetown Entertainment.
In February 2022, Cyrus set off on her Attention Tour, a music festival performance series that traversed North, South, and Central America, in promotion of Plastic Hearts. This was her first South American tour since 2011's Gypsy Heart Tour. As of March 26, 2022, the tour was over. Released on April 1, 2022, Attention: Miley Live was Cyrus's third live album. * Craftsmanship*
Miley Cyrus is mostly known as a pop vocalist with a hint of rock. Teen pop, country, hip hop, and psychedelic are just a few of the various musical styles that her work has traversed. According to Cyrus, Elvis Presley is her main motivation. Another list of musicians she has mentioned as an inspiration includes: Britney Spears, OneRepublic, Madonna, Dolly Parton, Timbaland, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Joan Jett, Lil Kim, Shania Twain, Hanson, and Lil Kim. People have said that Cyrus is mostly a pop singer ever since she started making music. She made her studio debut with Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, and critics said it sounded a lot like her "Hannah Montana" singles, which were pop-rock and bubblegum pop. With the publication of Breakout (2008), which showcased Cyrus's experimentation with numerous genres, she intended to put some space between herself and this sound. "I just hope this record showcases that, more than anything, I'm a [song]writer." Her early albums include lyrics about love and relationships, and Cyrus co-wrote eight songs for the album.
Despite her mezzo-soprano vocal range, Cyrus has been characterized as having an alto voice with a "Nashville twang" when she sings and when she talks. Her raspy voice is reminiscent to Pink and Amy Winehouse, among others. She has belter refrains in her vocals in "Party in the U.S.A." (2009) and "husky" in "Obsessed" (2009). Country music influences and Cyrus's "twangy vocals" are on display in singles like "The Climb" (2009) and "These Four Walls" (2008). The electropop style that Cyrus dabbled with in 2008's "Fly on the Wall" would later be expanded upon on her third studio album, Can't Be Tamed (2010). Even though Cyrus said after its release that it could be her last pop album, the record was originally going to have rock elements. Achieving personal and professional independence is a major theme throughout Cyrus's music. During a musical break, she began working on Bangerz (2013), which she had previously characterized as having a "dirty south feel" before it came out. Hip hop and synthpop were two genres that critics pointed out on the album. The tracks on the CD depict the narrative of her broken romance with Liam Hemsworth in chronological sequence. "A little psychedelic, but still in that pop world" was Cyrus's description of Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015). Cyrus said that Britney Spears and Metallica were big influences on her rock album Plastic Hearts. It "feels like a recap of her career's 15-plus years, with Cyrus breezing through genres with the ease of a well-seasoned tourist." Cyrus attributed its general theme to her fondness for Los Angeles, drawing inspiration from pop and dance-pop. Endless Summer Vacation (2023) is a tribute to Cyrus's career.
Theatrical performances
Media outlets have paid close attention to Cyrus's contentious musical performances, such as those on her Bangerz Tour (2014) and Milky Milky Milk Tour (2015). At the 2009 Teen Choice Awards, she sang "Party in the U.S.A." in an attire that caused a "national uproar" due to the perception of aerial dancing. On Britain's Got Talent, she sang "Can't Be Tamed" (2010) and was also the center of controversy for her onstage kissing of a female backup dancer; she later defended the act, saying she was innocent.
Media and public attention shifted to Cyrus after she and Robin Thicke performed "We Can't Stop" (2013) and "Blurred Lines" (2013) at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Her flesh-colored latex bikini revealing everything as she twerked against Thicke's crotch while touching his region with a gigantic foam finger. A critic compared the performance to a "bad acid trip," while another characterized it as a "trainwreck in the classic sense of the word as the audience reaction seemed to be a mix of confusion, dismay and horror in a cocktail of embarrassment," and the performance caused quite a stir in the media. Cyrus drew media attention during her Bangerz Tour for her distinctive attire and provocative performances. She entered the stage by sliding down a tongue-shaped slide.
Cyrus portrayed herself as a sweet, innocent adolescent idol when she first started out. After the 2008 Vanity Fair picture incident, Cyrus's star rose to new heights, and news broke that photo agencies were reportedly paying as much as $2,000 for each of her images. From her adolescent idol status, her image proceeded to change radically in the years that followed. Donny Osmond predicted in 2008 that Cyrus would soon be entering adulthood, saying, "Miley will have to face adulthood... As she does, she'll want to change her image, and that change will be met with adversity." Cyrus finally tried to shed her teen image with the release of the controversial music videos for "Can't Be Tamed" and "Who Owns My Heart" from her 2010 album Can't Be Tamed. Her actions in 2013 and 2014 caused a great deal of debate, despite her godmother's assertion that "...the girl can write. The girl can sing. The girl is smart. And she doesn't have to be so drastic. But I will respect her choices. I did it my way, so why can't she do it her way?" In 2013, Liel Leibovitz wrote on Tablet: "Talking to the website Hunger, the singer argued that those adults who deem her gyrations too sultry and her music too saccharine were simply too ancient—and Jewish—to get it. 'With magazines, with movies, it's always weird when things are targeted for young people yet they're driven by people that are like 40 years too old', Cyrus opined. And one group stands out in [her] mind as deserving of most of the blame: 'It can't be like this 70-year-old Jewish man that doesn’t leave his desk all day, telling me what the clubs want to hear.'"
Among the most powerful celebrities in the world, Cyrus was ranked seventeenth in 2014 according to Forbes. The magazine notes, "The last time she made our list was when she was still rolling in Hannah Montana money. Now the pop singer is all grown up and courting controversy at every turn." In August 2014, a comic book titled Fame: Miley Cyrus documented her life. It began with her controversial 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance and continued with coverage of her Disney fame and exploration of her childhood in Tennessee. Michael L. Frizell wrote the comic book, Juan Luis Rincón drew the pictures, and you may get it in print or digital form. After debuting at number ten in September 2010 on Billboard's 21 Under 21 listicle, Cyrus went on to rank twenty-first in 2011 and eighteenth in 2012. When Maxim released their 2013 Hot 100 list, Cyrus was at the top. With 16.3% of the staff vote, Cyrus placed third in Time magazine's November 2013 Person of the Year competition, which she participated in as a finalist. It was "using Miley as a lens through which to explore sociological thinking about identity, entertainment, media and fame" that the March 2014 special topics sociology course "The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender and Media" at New York's Skidmore College ran. Among the nine finalists for 2015's Person of the Year, Cyrus was named by The Advocate. Several celebrities, including Cyrus, had their likenesses transformed into Bratz dolls in March 2024 to mark the 65th anniversary of International Women's Day.
="life outside of work"
In addition to her $5.8 million property in Franklin, her hometown, Cyrus presently resides in Hidden Hills, California. While Cyrus always considered herself a Christian—a position she held even as a kid and young adult—her song "Milky Milky Milk" (2015) has allusions to Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism.
She made her childfree status known in 2019.
Gender and sexuality
Cyrus told her mom she was gay when she was fourteen years old and has since stated, "I never want to label myself! I am ready to love anyone that loves me for who I am! I am open." Time magazine claimed in June 2015 that Cyrus is gender flexible. According to a report, she "doesn't relate to being boy or girl, and I don't have to have my partner relate to boy or girl." She said that she's "literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn't involve an animal and everyone is of age" .
The LGBT community has Cyrus's full backing. Even though Cyrus wrote "My Heart Beats for Love" (2010) for a gay friend of hers, she now claims that London's large LGBT community makes it her favorite city to play in. To further her support for same-sex marriage, Cyrus gets a tattoo of an equals symbol on her ring finger. Cyrus went public with her continued gay identity following her 2018 marriage to a guy. "Fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations" is the mission of her 2014-founded Happy Hippie Foundation.
Being a vegan
By 2014, Cyrus had given up all animal products and had become a vegan. Cyrus went on The Joe Rogan Experience in September 2020 to talk about how she had to become a pescatarian due to an omega-3 deficiency. She said, "I've been a vegan for a very long time and I had to introduce fish and omegas into my life because my brain wasn't functioning properly." She went on to say, "I cried for the fish... it really hurts me to eat fish." Vegans and vegetarians were angry that Cyrus had decided to stop being vegan, accusing her of "spreading misinformation about omega-3" and "abandoning her vegan diet."
The use of cannabis
The fact that Cyrus uses cannabis for fun has been well-documented. She referred to it as "the best drug on earth" and a "happy drug" in an interview she gave to Rolling Stone in 2013. Cyrus seemed to light up onstage when winning the Best Video Award at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards; however, the delayed U.S. broadcast edited this out. During an interview with W magazine in 2014, Cyrus confessed, "I love weed" and added, "I just love getting stoned." In a 2017 interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Cyrus revealed that she had abstained from cannabis prior to the Younger Now album press tour in order to be "super clear" when talk about the album. "I also think it's the most magical, amazing... it's my first and true love. It's just not for me right now at this time in my life, but I'm sure there will be a day I will happily indulge." In May 2018, she shared this sentiment with Jimmy Kimmel. In a December 2018 interview with Andy Cohen, she recognized her mother as the one who reintroduced her to cannabis. In 2019, Cyrus sent a cannabis bouquet from Lowell Herb Co. to her "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart" partner Mark Ronson as a playful Valentine's Day present. Back in August, she put money into the cannabis startup.
According to Cyrus, she abstained from alcohol and cannabis before and immediately after her vocal chord surgery in November 2019.
Claiming to have been "in love" from the moment they met, Cyrus has stated that she dated singer-actor Nick Jonas from June 2006 to December 2007. Much of the media's focus was on their romance. Cyrus dated model Justin Gaston for nine months, from 2008 to 2009. In 2009, Cyrus started an on-again, off-again romance with Liam Hemsworth, who co-starred with her in the film The Last Song. Although they broke up, Cyrus remained romantically involved with actors Josh Bowman (2011) and Lucas Till (2009). Their engagement lasted from May 2012 all the way through September 2013. Stella Maxwell (2015) and Patrick Schwarzenegger (2014) were her exes.
In March 2016, Cyrus and Hemsworth reignited their romance, and in October of that year, they were engaged again. The Woolsey Fire destroyed Cyrus and Hemsworth's California house in November 2018. Cyrus and Hemsworth tied the knot in a small, intimate ceremony at their Nashville home on December 23. Even though she was "still very sexually attracted to women," she thought that her marriage "[redefined] what it looks like for someone that's a queer person like [herself] to be in a hetero relationship." Since "[they have] worn rings forever [and] definitely didn't need it in any way," Cyrus said that the ceremony was "kind of out of character for [her]" and that the couple didn't really need it. She said that "the timing felt right" and that "no one is promised the next day, or the next, so [she tries] to be 'in the now' as much as possible" as reasons why she and her husband decided to tie the knot after losing their house. Cyrus and Hemsworth's split was announced on August 10, 2019, and the couple's divorce was completed on January 28, 2020, with Hemsworth alleging "irreconcilable differences" in his complaint.

Cyrus started dating her longtime friend and Australian singer Cody Simpson in October 2019. Cyrus and Simpson broke up in August of 2020, according to her announcement. A spokesperson for the J/P Haitian Relief Organization, Cyrus said, "I want (kids) to do something they love. Not something that seems like a chore because someone tells them that's the right thing to do or what their parents want or what's important to people around them, but what's in their heart." In December 2011, Cyrus made an appearance in an ad for the organization, and she collaborated with her older brother Trace Cyrus to create a limited-edition line of charity apparel. Her nonprofit, Get Ur Good On, helps fund the education of disadvantaged children, and all of the money she made from selling these goods went toward that cause. Influence on culture and social standing
Among Cyrus's honorific moniker is "Teen Queen" for the significant impact she had on adolescent pop culture in the 2000s as an idol and the face of the Disney Channel's multibillion dollar Hannah Montana franchise. Hannah Montana, according to Bickford, used a business strategy that catered to pre-teens by integrating famous performances with elements of cinema, TV, and mainstream music. He compared the show's marketing strategy to that of adolescent pop musicians from the '90s like Britney Spears and NSYNC, calling them "genre-defining" for their target audience of young people. Miley and her alter ego Hannah, according to Morgan Genevieve Blue of Feminist Media Studies, are shown as post-feminist subjects because they are limited to consumerist ideas of femininity. The "world's biggest-ever teenage star" was Cyrus, according to Times correspondent Craig McLean.
With instantaneous ticket sales and sold-out stadiums, the Best of Both Worlds Tour topped the 2007 and 2008 concert tour earnings for new acts. A total of almost one million people saw Cyrus's Best of Both Worlds Tour, which earned her the Breakthrough Act title at the 2008 Billboard Touring Awards, according to Billboard boxscore. The tour made over US$54 million. Among the top 25 teen idol breakout moments of the rock era, Cyrus was ranked by Rolling Stone in 2012. The article by Andy Greene stated: "Miley's rise was meteoric. Tickets to her 2007 Best of Both Worlds tour sold out faster than any tour in memory... It seemed like she was poised to become a more stable version of Britney Spears - especially after singles 'The Climb' and 'Party In The USA'.". Paul McCartney, speaking on his 2011 tour, compared their success to the Beatles' because of her popularity. When asked about this, he said: "I think when they have new sensations, like Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber, teenagers identify with them, in the same way that the boys identified with The Beatles, [...] when you have thousands of teenagers feeling the same, they become elated because they have this love for something in common, whether it is The Beatles, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, or whatever."
"Party in the U.S.A." by Billy Ray Cyrus become an iconic American holiday and landmark song throughout the years. Since its release, the song has made a triumphant return to the charts on every Independence Day. The music video had a boost in popularity after Osama bin Laden's killing on May 2, 2011. Commenters flocked to the official YouTube video, turning it into a joyous hymn celebrating bin Laden's death. On the "We the People" petitions website of the White House, which began in 2013, there was a call for then-president Barack Obama to replace "The Star-Spangled Banner" with "Party in the U.S.A." After the 2020 presidential election, when major news outlets declared Joe Biden the victor, supporters in New York City began singing "Party in the U.S.A." at Times Square on November 7, 2020.
It was the promotional events around Cyrus's 2013 album Bangerz that cemented his status as one of the most divisive celebrities of the 2010s in popular culture at large. With the expectation that Cyrus's record "will probably be retrospectively deemed iconic, maybe even classic," Glamour writer Mickey Woods compared the promotional "era" for the album to that of Christina Aguilera's Stripped (2002) and Britney (2001), Britney's third studio album, and Britney, Britney Spears's fourth studio album, respectively. By releasing Bangerz, Cyrus "took control of her public persona, surprising less with her provocative antics than with her constant artistic evolution," according to Billboard, who ranked the album among the finest and most influential of the 2010s. By "weaving together urban and pop influences, what's most revered now is what it represented then," as Lyndsey Havens puts it, the record was an innovator in its time. Joe Will Made It's role as executive producer has allowed him to "[jump] to the forefront as an interesting character [...] in an era where a lot of producers have fallen behind the scenes again," according to Patrick Ryan of USA Today, who commented that Cyrus's album collaborations with Mike Will Made It contributed to his new-found prominence. According to Vice, Cyrus is "spinning circles around every single pop star who is trying to be edgy right now" and is "the most punk rock musician out there right now." James Montgomery of MTV News explained that Cyrus "[declared] her independence and [dominated] the pop-culture landscape" in 2013, adding that "she schooled—and shocked—us all in 2013, and did so on her own terms." Cyrus was named Best Artist of 2013 by MTV. Cyrus's controversial career evolution was named "Top Music Moment" of 2013, and she was a "maelstrom that expanded and grazed nearly every aspect of pop culture in 2013," according to Billboard. Because it was "one of the bolder musical choices in recent memory" and a song that defined the 2010s, the magazine also named "We Can't Stop" the greatest song of 2013. Critics ranked Cyrus's contentious 2013 VMAs performance with Thicke and the music video for the song as one of the most "defining" events in pop culture of the 2010s, ranking it 27th overall.
In 2015, a piece by Rebecca Nicholson of The Guardian compared Cyrus to Madonna, writing, "she's a Disney survivor with a fluid approach to gender identity. And, like the old three-chord punks, she gives really good quote." Criticizing Cyrus, Nicholson says that she follows "the 90s Madonna approach to public sexuality: it's deliberately provocative, and crucially, it is not being served up for male consumption." Nicholson also defends Cyrus's controversial rebellion, saying that the "Queen of Pop" is just a human, talented, and strong person hiding behind the character. While writing about how "no post-millennium child star [had] grown up as wildly, rapidly, or successfully as [Cyrus]" in November of that year, Vulture placed Cyrus number one on its "Disney and Nickelodeon Stars Gone Pop" listicle. Ranking eighth in the 2021 update, the magazine hailed her as "the archetype for Disney 2.0 stars" who "picked up the child-star trap of getting pigeonholed and set it on fire" and went on to have a successful adult music career. A member of Billboard's "Greatest of All Time Billboard 200 Artists" list, the singer came in at number 31 overall and number 9 among female musicians. For her charitable work in support of the LGBTQ+ community, the singer was named a "Queer Superhero" in a feature that appeared in the same magazine in 2017. Her 2019 Billboard "Greatest of All Time Artists" ranking put her at 62nd place, but her 2010s Top Artists ranking put her at 55th, indicating that she was one of the most successful performers of that decade.
Media and magazines have dubbed Cyrus the "Pop Chameleon" in recognition of her adaptability, aural and stylistic growth, and constant artistic reinvention. Several media outlets have hailed her as a pop icon; one of these is the BBC, who dubbed her "the ultimate pop star of the 21st century." One of the "Platinum Players" in music in 2023 was Miley Cyrus, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Billboard named Cyrus "Comeback Artist of the Year" and placed her in their "Greatest Pop Stars of 2023" listicle. Citing her 2023 song "Flowers" as the "biggest chart smash of her career" and stating that it "re-established [Cyrus] as one of pop’s foremost hitmakers," the magazine praised her achievement. Cyrus made history in 2024 when she became the youngest person to ever receive the Disney Legends award—a recognition of Cyrus's exceptional accomplishments to the Walt Disney Company—at the age of 31. That year, Cyrus was named number fifteen on Billboard's "Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century" list. The magazine praised Cyrus, saying, "No matter what style she's trying out, at the end of the day, she's always still just being Miley," referring to her ability to remain relevant and influential in the music industry. If you were looking for her 2025 "Top Artists of the 21st Century" ranking, she was number twenty-one per Billboard.
Some of the artists that have mentioned Cyrus as an influence or source of inspiration include Troye Sivan, Lil Nas X, Chappell Roan, JoJo Siwa, and Lea Michele.
