Justin Trudeau

Ottawa, Ontario is where Trudeau was born, and he went to school at College Jean-de-Brebeuf. With a BA in literature from McGill University in 1994 and a BBed from UBC in 1998, he earned a solid academic foundation. He returned to Montreal in 2002 to continue his studies after teaching high school in Vancouver after graduating. He oversaw the non-profit Canadian Avalanche Association and served as chair for the youth charity Katimavik. The Task Force on Youth Renewal of the Liberal Party designated him chair in 2006. He won the seat of Papineau in the House of Commons at the 2008 federal election.

Before taking up the position of critic for citizenship and immigration in 2010, he served as the official opposition spokesman for youth and multiculturalism in the Liberal Party in 2009. The position of secondary education and sports critic was bestowed upon him in 2011. Trudeau took over as Liberal Party leader in 2013 and guided his party to a landslide victory in the 2015 federal election. Being the eldest son of Pierre Trudeau, he became the second-youngest prime minister in Canada's history and the first to be born to a former prime minister.

During his first term in office, Trudeau attempted to reform Senate appointments by creating the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments and legalized medical assistance in dying and recreational marijuana through the Cannabis Act. He also established the federal carbon tax. Canada-U.S.-Mexico and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership are two examples of the trade agreements negotiated and signed by Trudeau's government. The government also signed the Paris Agreement on climate change. As a result of his actions in the Aga Khan and SNC-Lavalin scandals, he was fined by Canada's ethics commissioner for breaking the country's laws against conflicts of interest.

Following the 2019 federal election, Trudeau's Liberal Party was able to reduce the government to a minority. After the 2020 assaults in Nova Scotia, his government acted by launching a nationwide $10-a-day child care program, a ban on "assault-style" firearms, and a reaction to the COVID-19 epidemic. The ethics commissioner re-investigated him in relation to the WE Charity controversy, but this time he was exonerated. He guided the Liberals to yet another minority administration in the upcoming 2021 federal election. In 2022, he sanctioned Russia and authorized military assistance to Ukraine in reaction to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the Freedom Convoy protests; he also invoked the Emergencies Act. In early 2022, his party and the New Democratic Party signed a confidence and supply agreement. This agreement laid the groundwork for national pharmacare and the Canadian Dental Care Plan, which is available to residents with certain income levels. However, in late 2024, the NDP decided to end the agreement.

In the wake of a political crisis caused by Chrystia Freeland's abrupt resignation in December 2024, Trudeau announced his resignation as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party on January 6, 2025. He suggested that the party's leadership battle be postponed until March 24th, at which point Trudeau would step down as prime minister, but he will continue to serve as leader until the new leader is chosen.
